Hemp is grown in Ban Mai Yodkeeree in the Phopphra area by members of HEMP Phopphra, a small collective. The people in this village belong to the Hmong and Hemp plays an important role in their life.
Hemp uses a lot less water compared with cotton and in this village they do not use chemicals in any of the processes. After growing the hemp, the stems are cut down and left on the field for a few days, then the bark is taken off and in an elaborate process is turned into a thread. Natural dye is used to colour the threads which then are turned into beautiful fabrics.
With the Covid crisis, the group has decided to make Hemp masks and to keep it simple this time they have not added any natural dye so all you have is the natural colour of Hemp.
